Every story has two sides。
Every relationship has two perspectives。

This book was an emotional roller coaster from start to finish。 I had been waiting to read this book for a few years and was excited to finally enjoy it。 While I thought the overall story was okay, I found the characters to be too typical and the plot had way too much going on。 I did enjoy the overlapping plot lines and flashbacks, but there was too much flash around the story。

I completely understand many of the criticisms I see in reviews, but I still loved this。 It totally hit my The Secret History spot - absurdly self-consciously literary writing about beautiful, self-absorbed, intensely dislikable people。 If I wrote a book, I'd want to be in this groove too。 I completely understand many of the criticisms I see in reviews, but I still loved this。 It totally hit my The Secret History spot - absurdly self-consciously literary writing about beautiful, self-absorbed, intensely dislikable people。 If I wrote a book, I'd want to be in this groove too。 。。。more

Fates and Furies is a story about marriage and the hardships encountered over decades。 It is divided in half by two narratives。 The first being the beginning of the marriage from the husband's point of view, and the second being the from the woman's point of view。 Fates and Furies is beautifully written, but the story itself felt lackluster to me。 It felt as though the two narratives told two separate stories (which very well may have been the intention, as it was told from two points of view), Fates and Furies is a story about marriage and the hardships encountered over decades。 It is divided in half by two narratives。 The first being the beginning of the marriage from the husband's point of view, and the second being the from the woman's point of view。 Fates and Furies is beautifully written, but the story itself felt lackluster to me。 It felt as though the two narratives told two separate stories (which very well may have been the intention, as it was told from two points of view), it felt as though the genre and and the makeup of the story completely changed。 This made it hard to follow。 Additionally, the tale felt somewhat played out。 It felt like other stories about marital hardship, and the twists did not really get to me。I think it was an interesting read, but I would not recommend it。 。。。more

3。5。 The writing is intriguing and the characters are well-sketched。 Yet they also feel very familiar。 This must be done intentionally given the themes and trajectory of their individual and conjoined tales。 Overall, I'm glad I read it。 3。5。 The writing is intriguing and the characters are well-sketched。 Yet they also feel very familiar。 This must be done intentionally given the themes and trajectory of their individual and conjoined tales。 Overall, I'm glad I read it。 。。。more

This was somehow both compelling and a slog。 None of the characters were likeable, and I kept waiting for some insight or spark that would make me understand why these two people are in love and staying with each other。 The second half of the novel, where we get Mathilde's perspective, was slightly more interesting as it recast some of the information we had previously gotten in an interesting way。 But I had expected her section to make me sympathize with her more (since she is completely one di This was somehow both compelling and a slog。 None of the characters were likeable, and I kept waiting for some insight or spark that would make me understand why these two people are in love and staying with each other。 The second half of the novel, where we get Mathilde's perspective, was slightly more interesting as it recast some of the information we had previously gotten in an interesting way。 But I had expected her section to make me sympathize with her more (since she is completely one dimensional in Lotto's account) but it didn't actually add as much depth to her as I expected。 I am intrigued by the thesis of the novel that each member of a relationship experiences it differently and the secrets we keep influence our relationships, but I'm not sure that's enough to salvage this book for me。 Nevertheless, I did read it in one sitting and it's not a short book, so something kept me interested enough to do that。 。。。more

The second half is much better than the first。 I'd give the second half 4 stars but the first half about the husband is so boring, it detracts from the wife's story。 The second half is much better than the first。 I'd give the second half 4 stars but the first half about the husband is so boring, it detracts from the wife's story。 。。。more

Lauren Groff has an incredible way with words。 Despite the sweeping prose and poetic use of language, she never strays too far into being verbose。 The characterization of a pair of complicated narcissists manages to have enough depth to keep both husband and wife fascinating throughout。 This was an incredible read。 Like a relationship, it takes effort and patience, but it's worth the work you put into it。 Lauren Groff has an incredible way with words。 Despite the sweeping prose and poetic use of language, she never strays too far into being verbose。 The characterization of a pair of complicated narcissists manages to have enough depth to keep both husband and wife fascinating throughout。 This was an incredible read。 Like a relationship, it takes effort and patience, but it's worth the work you put into it。 。。。more

Giving this 1 star because I couldn’t even finish it。 Was absolutely furious when I had trudged through to get to what felt like the climax and we just turned around to do it all over again from her point of view。 Nope, no thanks, we are done here。 I so did not care about any of these characters and frankly didn’t care for the unnecessarily cerebral writing style either。

Really good for the most part! It felt a little difficult to get through at times but it was really interesting and well-written。

Читается легко и органично, но вот чтобы сюжет прямо зацепил - нет, даже во второй части。

Beautifully written and more interesting than I expected for a book about a marriage。

I was thrown aback at first but the story eventually drew me in where I couldn’t stop reading。 The characters lives seemed so grandiose (or unrealistic, but c’mon it’s fiction) until I realized that some people do lead lives we could hardly imagine。 The authors choice of descriptive words helped me picture the scenes and emotions the characters were going through。 It’s a story about love and secrets and the heights and depths that people often take to protect their loved ones。 I highly recommend I was thrown aback at first but the story eventually drew me in where I couldn’t stop reading。 The characters lives seemed so grandiose (or unrealistic, but c’mon it’s fiction) until I realized that some people do lead lives we could hardly imagine。 The authors choice of descriptive words helped me picture the scenes and emotions the characters were going through。 It’s a story about love and secrets and the heights and depths that people often take to protect their loved ones。 I highly recommend listening to the audiobook version because it helped me get through some of the more “difficult” situations the characters went through。 I also appreciate the way the author halved the book, one from Lotto perspective and the other from Mathilde’s。 This book is not for someone who is uncomfortable with descriptive sexual “encounters。” 。。。more

“It occurred to her then that life was conical in shape, the past broadening beyond the sharp point of the lived moment。 The more life you had, the more the base expanded, so that the wounds and treasons that were nearly imperceptible when they happened stretched like tiny dots on a balloon slowly blown up。 A speck on the slender child grows into a gross deformity in the adult, inescapable, ragged at the edges。”

I was really looking forward to a different genre of fiction but this book seriously lacked anything。 I painfully read every word/page but it took me two weeks to read because I did anything to avoid reading it! Since I never give up on a book once I start it, I did the same with this one but finishing this one almost made me want to give up reading entirely! The author’s use of vocabulary and attempts to draw you in just fall short。 I stayed until the end and am so glad I am out of this misery!! 3。5。 This book is beautifully written。 I loved the second part where we read the wife’s part of the story。 The first part was very slow and I almost DNF。 I’m glad I didn’t though, because the second part is amazing!

DNFI've had this on my to-read pile since last October。 I got about halfway through。 I've finally given up。 It's beautifully written, but it's so self-important。 The last thing I can about is some tortured, rich white boy who aspires to be an artist。 I had difficulty sympathizing with him。 Had it been for Groff's beautiful sentences, I probably wouldn't have made it as far as I did。 It often felt like God was the narrator, but even God can't make me like Lotto。 DNFI've had this on my to-read pile since last October。 I got about halfway through。 I've finally given up。 It's beautifully written, but it's so self-important。 The last thing I can about is some tortured, rich white boy who aspires to be an artist。 I had difficulty sympathizing with him。 Had it been for Groff's beautiful sentences, I probably wouldn't have made it as far as I did。 It often felt like God was the narrator, but even God can't make me like Lotto。 。。。more

Engrossing stories and characters。 The first half, Fates, is told from the male protagonist's point of view; the second half, Furies, by the female protagonist。 I really liked this book。 Engrossing stories and characters。 The first half, Fates, is told from the male protagonist's point of view; the second half, Furies, by the female protagonist。 I really liked this book。 。。。more

There were moments when this book lost me for a few days or a week, which disappointed me given how well received it had been at publication。 On the other hand, the end blew me away, not only resolving everything, but releasing me from the guilt of having not liking some sections as much as I thought I should。 A book written for writers and dramatists, but most of all artists of any type, the layers of the text reflect the layers of a life。

Agnieszka

Wow this was horrible。 I struggled through 70% and decided the rest of this rumbling novel wasn’t worth my time。

Katherine Scott

This is a reluctant four stars。 The writing is as lyrical and complex as you would expect of Groff。 The book is divided into two perspectives, and the male character was portrayed in such a self-indulgent way that I found getting through the middle to be a slog。 Maybe it was overly ambitious?

Emily Culbertson

I didn’t even finish it。 Did not enjoy the ‘unique’ writing style。 The main guy is an entitled narcissist and the woman dotes on him and accomplishes nothing beyond existing as a housewife。Do not recommend。

A sexy, sultry and devastating book。 I really loved it。 A fascinating take on a seemingly perfect relationship from both sides。 The writing style is gorgeous and unique, and the way the story is divided into two sections makes for two books in one。 The way Groff plays with the chronology, choosing interesting and at times genuinely ingenious moments to reveal different parts of information or tell a different perspective on an already-covered anecdote, makes this honestly unputdownable。 Characte A sexy, sultry and devastating book。 I really loved it。 A fascinating take on a seemingly perfect relationship from both sides。 The writing style is gorgeous and unique, and the way the story is divided into two sections makes for two books in one。 The way Groff plays with the chronology, choosing interesting and at times genuinely ingenious moments to reveal different parts of information or tell a different perspective on an already-covered anecdote, makes this honestly unputdownable。 Character development, particularly of Mathilde's character in the second half of the book, is some of the best I've ever come across。 。。。more
